Southern California — The eKadence Learning Foundation is proud to announce a partnership with Get Lit to support literacy and creative expression among high school students throughout Southern California. As part of this partnership, eKadence is providing the technology platform that will allow students who have submitted their original poetry via Get Lit’s Uni(verse) platform to share and vote on their favorite entries via eKadence, helping to make the contest accessible and engaging.

This collaboration brings together Get Lit’s nationally recognized expertise in youth poetry and literacy programs with eKadence’s commitment to empowering learners through innovative educational technology. The contest will encourage students to explore their perspectives and share personal stories of their neighborhoods, all while strengthening critical reading and writing skills in a supportive and enriching environment.

“Poetry has the power to give voice to young people and help them express their unique perspectives,” said Dang Vu, Executive Director at eKadence Learning Foundation. “We’re proud to provide a platform that makes it easier for students to participate, share their work, and engage with each other, while supporting Get Lit’s mission to inspire literacy and creativity.”

Students from participating school districts—including LAUSD, Alhambra USD, Compton USD, Antelope Valley USD, Manhattan Beach USD, and many others—will submit their original poems to Get Lit via its Uni(verse) platform. The poems will then be showcased on the eKadence platform, where they can be shared and voted on by the community.

10 winners will be chosen by popular vote, with an additional 10 winners chosen by literary and arts icons including Olivia Gatwood, Chen Chen, Safia Elhilio, Gina Belafonte, and Aloe Blacc. Winners will be selected by December 1, and will be recognized in a regional celebration event and published in an anthology, with select works featured through Get Lit channels and amplified by eKadence’s technology.

“Get Lit is excited to partner with eKadence to expand access to creative expression for high school students sharing their stories of home,” said Diane Lane, Founder and CEO at Get Lit. “We know that writing and performing poetry empowers youth to communicate, reflect, and engage in meaningful ways, and this contest will showcase the incredible talent of students and teachers across the greater region. The best way to get to know a place is to hear from the people who live there – especially young people, whose voices often go unheard! This is a unique opportunity for our youth to write their own story of where they’re from.”

Schools, educators, and students interested in participating or learning more about the contest can visit https://www.getlit.org/if-i-awaken-in-los-angeles-contest. Contest winners and next steps will be announced December 1.
